As the snow gathers on the exterior landscape, its weight can be felt by the eye. Millions of gorgeous snowflakes, droplets of geometric wonder, light and free by nature, begin to accumulate.
How can something so small and airy congeal into such a dense blanket, closing off oxygen from the grasses, smothering the earth below from all light and air?
Snowflakes are like the vritti, electrical thought patterns, of our mind. There are no two thoughts alike because it is developed from all of our individuated experiences, carefully shaped by every conversation, lesson, adventure and cultural value you have collected in your years. These thoughts can bring us insight, both false or real, and they can bring us into the depth of a particular emotion.
Like snow falling on to the car windshield, thoughts will begin to veil our view, minimize our perspective and leave us feeling isolated, removing us from this expansive reality.
The two core principles in the yoga system act as your windshield wipers to keep your view clear and expansive. Abhyasa, dedicated and consistent practice, and vairagya, non attachment constantly work to wipe your mental slate clean!
Lets start 2019 by (re)committing to ourselves and the practice of yoga. We can practice non attachment simply by noticing the present moment, again and again.
These two principles will begin to lift the veil of self limiting thought patterns and expand our understanding of the self. They will assist in thinning the veil cultivated by the storms of our mind so we can illuminate our brightest self and connect with more of the subtle aspects of the world!
